L’inconnu

(2020)

L’INCONNU, French for ‘the unknown’, is located at the edge of Vancouver, British Columbia. An exploration of liminal and ephemeral space, L’INCONNU employs the use of theoretical planes that extended and intersect, creating spaces between them where program is housed. This housed program consists of a ‘white box’ theater, bar, grand foyer, and supporting program such as rehearsal spaces and administrative offices. It’s location on the edge of the Vancouver Harbor sites the project as an outward extension of the city’s grid, while establishing the building’s presence as datum along the city’s edge. Interior program is hidden from the exterior, at night mere slivers of light escape, creating a sense of curiosity as to what may be inside; the unknown. Nested between planar elements, the “white box” theater is center stage in both plan and section. Special attention is further placed in the procession of space leading up to the theater, which fully immerses spectators in the experience of the theater.
